John Peel Farm Cottage
D'ye ken John Peel? John Peel Farm comprises a cottage and barn, both part of the farm run by the famous huntsman John Peel and his wife Mary. Both are Grade II listed buildings some 300 years old.
The holiday cottage is quirky due to its history, with such features as original stone stairs and flags and wide oak floorboards. The walls are some 18" thick.
The cottage sleeps 4 (1 double, 2 singles). It has oil-fired central heating and hot water, woodburning stove, halogen hob, electric oven, microwave, fridge, bathroom with bath and shower.
The whole estate uses sustainable practices wherever possible, aiming to rest lightly on the earth.
The grounds of over 3 acres, as well as having a pond and trees, shelter brown hares, badgers, newts, and abundant local bird life, via a variety of habitats.
The setting, surrounded by moorland, is beautiful and peaceful, with nearby walks. It's a couple of miles to Caldbeck, (you can walk via the Howk), and less than 10 to the famous osprey-viewing point.
The barn is being restored using sheep's wool insulation, underfloor heating, a Ground Source Heat Pump and solar panel, and local sustainable sources for green oak timber and re-claimed slates.
The nearest mountain is High Pike, while Skiddaw, Blencathra and Carrock Fell are all close by, as well as Bassenthwaite Lake.
This area is ideal for Walking / Cycling / Horse Riding and Relaxing. Open access to fells is directly from the cottage. The Cumbria Way and cycle routes such as the C2C and Reivers are also close by.
